Determining Possible and Necessary Winners under Common Voting Rules Given Partial Orders
نویسندگان
چکیده
Usually a voting rule requires agents to give their preferences as linear orders. However, in some cases it is impractical for an agent to give a linear order over all the alternatives. It has been suggested to let agents submit partial orders instead. Then, given a voting rule, a profile of partial orders, and an alternative (candidate) c, two important questions arise: first, is it still possible for c to win, and second, is c guaranteed to win? These are the possible winner and necessary winner problems, respectively. Each of these two problems is further divided into two sub-problems: determining whether c is a unique winner (that is, c is the only winner), or determining whether c is a co-winner (that is, c is in the set of winners). We consider the setting where the number of alternatives is unbounded and the votes are unweighted. We completely characterize the complexity of possible/necessary winner problems for the following common voting rules: positional scoring rules, Copeland, maximin, Bucklin, ranked pairs, voting trees, and plurality with runoff.

متن کاملVoting procedures with incomplete preferences
We extend the application of a voting procedure (usually defined on complete preference relations over candidates) when the voters’ preferences consist of partial orders. We define possible (resp. necessary) winners for a given partial preference profile R with respect to a given voting procedure as the candidates being the winners in some (resp. all) of the complete extensions of R. We show th...
متن کاملOn the Exact Amount of Missing Information that Makes Finding Possible Winners Hard
We consider election scenarios with incomplete information, a situation that arises often in practice. There are several models of incomplete information and accordingly, different notions of outcomes of such elections. In one well-studied model of incompleteness, the votes are given by partial orders over the candidates. In this context we can frame the problem of finding a possible winner, wh...
متن کاملTowards a Dichotomy of Finding Possible Winners in Elections Based on Scoring Rules
To make a joint decision, agents (or voters) are often required to provide their preferences as linear orders. To determine a winner, the given linear orders can be aggregated according to a voting protocol. However, in realistic settings, the voters may often only provide partial orders. This directly leads to the POSSIBLE WINNER problem that asks, given a set of partial votes, if a distinguis...
متن کاملA Multivariate Complexity Analysis of Determining Possible Winners Given Incomplete Votes
The POSSIBLE WINNER problem asks whether some distinguished candidate may become the winner of an election when the given incomplete votes are extended into complete ones in a favorable way. POSSIBLE WINNER is NP-complete for common voting rules such as Borda, many other positional scoring rules, Bucklin, Copeland etc. We investigate how three different parameterizations influence the computati...
